The island of Mallorca, which the Germans lovingly call the 17th federal state of Germany, stays the most popular destination of German tourists for their summer holidays. This is the result of an analysis conducted by the Verband Internet Reisevertrieb e.V. For this analysis data of online bookings have been evaluated, which have been executed over the systems of Traveltainment, a leading provider of travel technology.
Other popular holiday destinations in the closer neighborhood of Germany are the Turkish Riviera (Antalya) and Egypt (Hurghada). Besides Mallorca further islands are highly trendy. On the one hand the Greek islands Crete, Rhodes and Kos, on the other hand the Canary Islands. Egypt with three destinations at a single blow, namely Sharm el Sheik, Marsa Alam and Hurghada, was able to register the biggest gain of German travelers. Cyprus (Larnaca) and Morocco (Agadir) also belong to the upward climbers of the short-distance destinations.
Beneath the long-distance destinations the Dominican Republic (Punta Cana) defends its sole lead. Second and third position are occupied by the United Arab Emirates with Abu Dhabi and Dubai. The Maldives, Thailand (Phuket) and Mexico (Cancún) follow. The biggest increase beneath the more distant destinations was recorded by Dubai, Jamaica and Cuba with its three destinations, Holguín, Havana and Varadero.
